  1. the plans are provided as .stl files for loading into SketchUp. I use the free web-based version, which works surprisingly well.
  2. I create SketchUp models to work out basic looks and construction details but often finalize the exact dimensions during the build.

Dog Toy “Funnel” / Storage

For the packs who, like ours, have (too) many toys. The idea here is that the humans throw the toys in at the top, and the dogs pull them out at the bottom. It really does a great job of keeping the toy pile tidy and makes the toy cleanup quick and fun.

I often change the plans on the fly during building but this time, there was no need to change anything and the built piece’s dimensions match the plan exactly.

I cut the panels out of red oak plywood. All curves are quarter circles with a 3" radius. The curved parts were cut by hand using a jigsaw with a fine blade. All exposed edges were also rounded over with a roundover bit in a small trim router. The bottom of the box features a modified version of the leveling leg assembly. The box was put together with pocket screws. Then it was finished with Danish oil (natural), which brought out the grain of the oak veneer nicely.

Some simple but stylish feeders for the doggos. The plans are for the first one I built, for our senior Yorkie, so it’s for a small size. However it can be scaled up to larger versions without problems (see middle picture). The feeder is put together using pocket screws, that can be completely hidden from view. The legs use the adjustable leveler assembly I like to use.

The feeders are finished with a few coats of water-based poly. I also recommend caulking the corners at the base of the side and back walls with silicone, to avoid water seeping in and causing water damage over time. (Or maybe apply extra lots of poly in the corners…)

For the bowls, I use the Van Ness brand “Heavyweight Crock Style Dish” bowls, they are very sturdy and last a long time.

Low-waste Planter Box

The idea behind these is that you can build one of these out of two 6-foot 1x8 fence boards from the home center, and have no or very little left over lumber to deal with.

For each box, you need to cut four longer pieces (sides and bottoms) and two shorter ones (front and back). The shorter pieces should always be 15“, which is the ideal width for a bottom consisting of two panels. The length of the longer pieces can vary as needed. If you make them 28.5” long, then the box precisely uses two 6 foot boards, as you can cut two of the long pieces and one short piece out of a board (28.5"*2 + 15" = 72“). In reality though, fence boards are pretty roughly sawn and will slightly vary in length. Additionally, the ends of boards are often cracked / chipped / not square and also often they have a notch at one end, so I usually cut these 25” long. That way I can cut a few inches off both ends of the board. The top picture on the left shows the results of sawing 4 fence boards for two 25" long boxes. The leftovers are in the middle between the two stacks of boards.

The resulting boxes are a nice manageable and movable size. They can be put on supports or stacked. One additional neat thing about this size box is that the inside volume is a little more than 1.5 cubic feet, which is a common size for potting soil bags at the home center.
